Royal Tenenbaum, eccentric and bon vivant, leaves his family when the three children are about 10 to 12 years old. By this time, son Chas is already a recognised financial genius, son Richie a tennis ace and adopted daughter Margot a writer of successful plays. Twenty years later, there is hardly anything left of the children´s genius; instead, all three have developed pronounced neuroses. One by one, they return to their mother´s New York home, where Father Royal soon reappears, supposedly terminally ill, but in reality broke and lonely. His thuggish ways and the long-held hatred of two of his children cause old conflicts and hurts to resurface. When Royal´s hoax about cancer is exposed, the family system is completely shaken up once again.
